Frequently Asked Questions

Most frequent questions and answers

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and self-defense system that is trained for sport (grappling tournaments, both gi and no-gi) or MMA (mixed martial arts). The focus of Jiu-Jitsu is submission grappling (ground fighting). It teaches a smaller, weaker person to successfully defend against a larger, stronger opponent using leverage and technique.

How is Jiu-Jitsu different from other martial arts?

Combining traditional Judo takedowns, which use momentum and leverage, with the most proficient ground fighting art provides you or your child with the best possible system; confidence defending an attack while standing or on the ground.

Is there striking (kicking or punching)?

No, instead of exchanging strikes Jiu-Jitsu teaches to close the space an opponent needs to throw an effective strike, then to control and finish with a submission either standing or on the ground.

Is there sparring?

Yes, Jiu-Jitsu is one of the few martial arts in which you can test your skills sparring against a live resisting opponent (commonly referred to as rolling). Since there is no striking, you can spar without having to hold back in fear of leaving marks or bruises.

Will I get seriously hurt?

Absolutely not, in fact, Jiu-Jitsu is one of the only martial arts where you can call a stop to training if you feel uncomfortable by tapping out! So if you feel discomfort, you can quickly end the match before any an injury can happen. In addition, instructors monitor all rolling, that way if you are in danger of injury, the instructors will end the match before any harm can come.

Is Jiu-Jitsu a good workout?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can provide you with far more extensive results than a typical aerobic exercise. While drilling you will receive a cardio workout, and the resistance given during rolling provides you with a good base to improve your core strength through intense abdominal workout. Jiu-Jitsu increases your muscle tone, and reduces body fat while improving your balance, coordination, cardiovascular capacity, and muscular endurance.
